Polyurethanes
Oil-based and water-based polyurethanes are the two major types of polyurethanes. Let’s look at the differences between them.
- Water-based polyurethane has a very simple process to apply and dry. The whole method may take less than 12 hours in some cases. Aside from being quick to apply, water-based polyurethane has a low odor and low VOC emission. This finish provides a transparent, smooth, and glossy wood surface that does not alter the color of the flooring.
- Polyurethanes with a castor oil base, on the other hand, take fewer coats to dry and need more time than water-based polyurethanes. The fumes, scents, and VOCs released by these materials are all unhealthy. Woods that have a yellow tinge will be pushed toward a richer gold color while darker wood tones can be brightened with the amber tone and oily sheen.
Another major difference between these two is that water-based poly is harder than oil-based, making it more susceptible to surface abrasions, and oil-based poly is more prone to denting.
Shellac
